PART 2. Describe a movie you watched recently
You should say:

- What it was about
- And explain why you chose to watch this movie
I’d like to talk about a movie I watched recently called Oppenheimer. I watched it about two weeks ago at home on a streaming platform. Since it’s a long and intense film, I decided to watch it alone so I could focus on every detail without distractions.
The movie is a historical drama directed by Christopher Nolan, and it tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist who played a key role in developing the atomic bomb during World War II. It explores not only the scientific achievements but also the moral and ethical dilemmas he faced after realizing the devastating impact of his creation. The film also highlights his personal struggles, political challenges, and the consequences of his work.
I chose to watch this movie for a few reasons. First, I’m really interested in historical films, especially ones based on real events. I also admire Christopher Nolan as a director—his storytelling style is always unique and thought-provoking. Additionally, the movie received a lot of praise from critics, and I wanted to see if it lived up to the hype. After watching it, I found it to be incredibly engaging, with powerful performances and stunning cinematography.

PART 3. Movies
1. What kinds of movies do you think are successful in your country?
Well, in Vietnam, action films, romantic dramas, and comedies tend to be the most successful. Many people enjoy lighthearted comedies because they offer a great way to relax and unwind. Meanwhile, romantic dramas, especially those with touching storylines, attract a large audience, particularly young adults. In recent years, historical and folklore-based movies have also gained popularity as they reflect Vietnamese culture and traditions.
- lighthearted (adj): nhẹ nhàng, thư giãn
- relax and unwind: thư giãn, xả stress
- touching storylines: cốt truyện cảm động
- folklore-based movies: phim dựa trên văn hóa dân gian
2. Do Vietnamese people prefer to watch domestic movies or foreign movies?
It depends on personal preferences, but overall, foreign movies, especially Hollywood and Korean films, seem to dominate the market. These movies often have higher production quality, better visual effects, and more engaging storylines. However, Vietnamese films are also improving in terms of storytelling and cinematography, so more people are starting to appreciate domestic productions. Movies that incorporate traditional values or relatable daily life situations tend to do well among local audiences.
- personal preferences: sở thích cá nhân
- storyline (n): cốt truyện
3. Do you think only well-known directors can create the best movies?
Not necessarily. While famous directors have more experience and resources to produce high-quality films, there are many talented new filmmakers who can create outstanding movies. With advancements in technology and independent filmmaking, even lesser-known directors can deliver compelling stories. A great movie depends on many factors, such as script, acting, cinematography, and audience reception, rather than just the reputation of the director.
- outstanding (adj): xuất sắc
- compelling stories: câu chuyện hấp dẫn
- audience reception: sự đón nhận của khán giả
4. Why do many movies starring famous actors or actresses fail to achieve good results?
There are several reasons. First, a strong cast doesn’t guarantee a well-written script or engaging storytelling. Sometimes, movies rely too much on star power and neglect other important elements like plot development and character depth. Second, high expectations can lead to disappointment if the movie doesn’t meet the audience’s standards. Lastly, poor marketing or bad timing can also affect a film’s success, no matter how famous the cast is.
- well-written script: kịch bản được viết tốt
- plot development: sự phát triển cốt truyện
- character depth: chiều sâu nhân vật
5. Why do people prefer to watch movies in the cinema?
Watching movies in the cinema offers a more immersive experience with a big screen, surround sound, and a comfortable atmosphere. The cinematic experience enhances visual effects and action scenes, making them more thrilling. Additionally, watching movies in a theater allows people to enjoy films without distractions, unlike at home, where they might check their phones or multitask. For many, going to the cinema is also a social activity, as they can share the experience with friends and family.
- immersive (adj): đắm chìm
- surround sound: âm thanh vòm
- cinematic experience: trải nghiệm điện ảnh
- thrilling (adj): hồi hộp, kịch tính
