PART 1.

1. What do you usually do on your birthday?

I usually spend my birthday in a low-key and meaningful way. Instead of big celebrations, I prefer to gather with my loved ones and enjoy some quality time together. We often eat out at a cozy restaurant, or sometimes I treat myself to a relaxing day and a nice homemade cake at home. For me, it’s more about creating memories than throwing fancy parties.

  • low-key (ADJ): đơn giản, không ồn ào
  • gather with loved ones (V): tụ họp với người thân yêu
  • quality time (N): thời gian chất lượng bên người thân
  • dinner out / eat out: đi ăn ngoài
  • treat oneself (V): tự thưởng cho bản thân
  • homemade cake (N): bánh sinh nhật tự làm

2. What did you do on your birthday when you were young?

When I was a child, birthdays were super exciting. My parents often threw small parties for me at home, with colorful balloons, party hats, and sometimes even a piñata. I remember inviting my classmates, playing games like musical chairs, and singing the birthday song really loudly. The best part was always blowing out the candles and opening gifts. It was such a joyful and carefree time.

  • throw a party (V): tổ chức tiệc
  • piñata (N): đồ chơi có kẹo bên trong (phá lấy kẹo)
  • blow out candles (V): thổi nến
  • carefree (ADJ): vô tư, không lo nghĩ

3. Do you think it is important for you to celebrate your birthday?

Yes, I believe it’s quite important, even if it’s just something small. A birthday is a reminder that I’ve grown another year older and hopefully wiser. It gives me a moment to pause, reflect on what I’ve done over the past year, and think about my goals for the next one. Besides, it’s also a good excuse to reconnect with people I love and spend time with them.

  • wiser (ADJ): khôn ngoan hơn
  • reflect on (V): suy ngẫm về
  • reconnect with (V): kết nối lại với

4. Whose birthday do you think is the most important to celebrate?

Personally, I think my parents’ birthdays are the most important. They’ve sacrificed so much for me over the years, and I want to make them feel special and appreciated. Celebrating their birthdays is also a way for me to say thank you, and it’s one of the few times in the year when the whole family gathers together.

  • sacrifice (V / N): hy sinh
  • make someone feel special (V): làm ai đó thấy đặc biệt
  • feel appreciated (V): cảm thấy được trân trọng
  • family gather (N): sự tụ họp gia đình

5. How do children celebrate birthdays in your country?

In Vietnam, children’s birthdays are usually quite fun and colorful. Parents often organize parties at home or in play centers with decorations, cakes, and lots of games. It's common to see kids dressed in cute outfits, surrounded by friends and family. The first birthday, called “thôi nôi,” is especially important. Families invite relatives to celebrate and pray for the child’s future health and success.

  • pray for (V): cầu nguyện cho
  • future health (N): sức khỏe trong tương lai

6. How did you celebrate your last birthday?

On my last birthday, I kept things pretty simple because I had a lot of work at the time. I spent the morning relaxing at home and treating myself to some of my favorite food. In the evening, I met up with a few close friends for dinner. They surprised me with a cake and some thoughtful gifts. It wasn’t a big celebration, but it felt warm and meaningful.

  • keep it simple (V phrase): giữ mọi thứ đơn giản
  • treat oneself (V): tự thưởng cho bản thân
  • thoughtful gift (N): món quà ý nghĩa
  • warm and meaningful (ADJ): ấm áp và đầy ý nghĩa

7. Is there a difference between the way you celebrated your birthday in the past and in the present?

Yes, there’s a big difference. When I was younger, birthdays were all about fun and excitement – balloons, games, and tons of snacks. I used to look forward to gifts more than anything. But now, I care more about the people around me and the quality of time we spend together. I think as we grow older, we value deeper connections over material things.

  • value (V): coi trọng
  • deeper connections (N): sự kết nối sâu sắc
  • material things (N): những thứ vật chất
